Anna Politkovskaya ha iniziato come giornalista locale per la carta stampata ed è arrivata affrontare i campi di sterminio ceceni, denunciando la corruzione dello stato russo sotto il dominio di Vladimir Putin e lottando per i diritti umani. Si è rifiutata di cedere anche dopo numerosi atti di intimidazione e violenza, tra cui l'avvelenamento. Alla fine è stata assassinata nell'ascensore del suo condominio e non è ancora chiaro chi abbia pagato per l'omicidio su commissione.
